FAQ: I am not good at sales

[00:03:07.5] KC: Welcome to the All About Beachbody Coaching Podcast. My name is Keith, your host and today we’re talking about when you have that concern and you want to become a Beachbody coach but you’re concerned that you’re not really good at sales, you’re not a sales person, you think sales people are icky, or you’re not good at that, right? And I want to let you know that I actually struggled in this business in the beginning because I came from a sales background.
Believe it or not, the majority of successful coaches came from some type of teaching background because this business is not about sales, it’s about teaching and let me explain and go into detail a little bit about that. So a lot of times, we look at something like Beachbody or network marketing and we think that it’s about selling stuff to other people, right? Like, “If I sign up as a Beachbody coach, I have to get other coaches to sign up and then I have to go find more coaches to sign and then I have to get other people to buy our programs and to buy Shakeology and stuff like that.”
That’s usually the way that we look at this business opportunity, 90% of people look at it that way, 90% of the coaches who signed up look at it that way and that’s what they do. But not you. Not after you listen to this episode because I am going to explain to you what this business is really about and why some people are crazy, crazy successful in this business while others really just keep spinning their wheels. So this is not a sales business, it’s a sales business. It’s a sponsoring and mentoring business. I want to repeat that: It’s not a sales business, it’s a sponsoring and mentoring business.
What I’m looking for when I am working with somebody, when I’m looking to bring in a new coach, I’m looking to establish a relationship with that person. I’m looking to really, really — told my wife that it’s almost like getting into a business partnership or getting into a marriage with each person that I am mentoring and my ultimate goal is to get you to the point that you’re able to continue on and do your business on your own and you’re doing what I taught with other people.
So that’s a whole lot that I just went through but here’s what I did in the beginning. I signed somebody up and then I went to the next person and signed somebody else up and then I went to the next person and signed somebody else up and then signed somebody else up. Then the first person quit and then the second person quit and then I signed somebody else up and then the third person quit and then I signed somebody else up and the fourth person quit.
Because I was just looking at people that — I was at a desperate time in my life and I was just looking to sign up people, right? That’s how I thought I was going to be successful in this business and then I started working with my mentor and he’s helped me so much in this business and he helped me to understand that it’s not about signing people up. It’s about sponsoring and mentoring people. It’s about signing them up and then helping them to get their business started, helping them to sign up their first person, helping them to start teaching their people how to sign up other people.
This is a business of duplication of teaching, of mentoring, not of sales. That’s why teachers are so good at this business because they get that, right? They get that process of investing time into people. They really, really, really get that and if you’re doing this business correctly, you should never feel like you’re selling, not once. When you’re talking to people and this is what we teach and what we really, really spend — this is what we spend the most time on is teaching you how to start conversations and build relationships and then people ask you what it is that you’re doing. They ask you if they can learn more about their products or programs. They ask you if they can learn more about coaching.
So we’re going to teach you how you’re going to attract those type of people to you, and then how to ask the simple question, “Have you ever considered this?” Such a simple question, such a non-invasive question. But it’s not about selling. There is really no part of this that’s selling and if you’re doing it that way, if you’re going out and you’re going door to door and knocking on doors or if you’re at the mall and you’re chasing people down with a spear like, “I got you! All right let me go get the next one,” you’re doing it wrong.
Because what we’re doing is we’re looking for people that are looking for us. We are looking for people, and guess what? This is a lot of people in the world. We’re looking for people who are looking to feel healthier, who are looking to get more fit, who are looking to earn a little bit of extra income, who are looking to be a part of a positive, supportive, loving, compassionate community. A community of people that are changing lives and that are a beacon of light in all of the craziness that’s going on in the world right now. That’s the type of people that we’re looking for, and again, it’s the people that are looking for us.
So if you’re not good at sales, good. If you are good at sales and you come from a sales background, you’re going to need to let go of a lot of that because this isn’t a sign up the next guy, sign up the next guy, sign up the next guy business. The way that I word this business is like the term, the legal term is network marketing. I believe its relational marketing. It’s about building relationships, building trust, supporting and encouraging each other.
It’s not about signing up a 100 people, it’s about signing up one person, helping them to get started, helping them to get their business going then signing somebody else up. Make sense? So if you’re not good at sales, good. If you are good at sales, then you can still succeed in this but we just have to have a little bit of shift in the mindset from selling people to mentoring, sponsoring, supporting, loving, caring for people.

So really, really cool thing there and it gives you the opportunity to understand that there’s somebody out there just like you that’s doing this business.
