“Throw away all the elaborate planning strategies, get clear on what you really want, focus your attention on the end result and then just take one step at a time.” Keith

In this episode I’m going to ask you to throw away everything that you know about planning and goal setting. I’ve found the simplest and most effective way to be; getting crystal clear on what it is you want to accomplish, holding a vision of that and then just focusing on the next step. Take it one step at a time until you have realized the vision you initially held.

Principle One – Identify the intent or goal [6:17]

Principle Two – Understanding the law of what Keith calls “magnetic mind” [7:57]

Principle Three – Focus on what your next step is going to be [9:45]

Principle Four – Feeling the nature of your end goal [14:35]

Principle Five – Using the law of magnetic mind to overcome obstacles [17:59]

Principle Six – What’s on your list that you’re not willing to do [20:42]

Principle Seven – Timeframe Bullshit [22:10]

Bonus principle – Find a mentor [23:15]

Jim Rohn quote – “You want to change, you want to move, you want to do something different, you’re not a tree, move” [25:08]

You’re listening to The Business of Life podcast. Practical advice for creating the life you love to live. Here’s your host, Keith Callahan.

KC: Alright, welcome to today’s episode. I am fired up, excited. I was at lunch today and literally at lunch and all of a sudden I was like “Oh my God, I got this idea for a podcast episode.” And, I drove home outlined it real quick and now here I am recording this for you and excited to share with you my personal 7-step system for accomplishing or changing anything in your life. So, you know, when we look at certain things that we want to accomplish in life or certain changes that we want to make and this started off as something that I would in business and it really parlayed over into my personal life and I’ll just give you a little bit of a story, a little background to this.

[01:13]

So, my wife Amy is pregnant with our fourth baby right now. We actually find out if it’s going to be a boy or a girl in 3 days. So, when you’re listening to this we’ll know whether it’s a boy or a girl. But, as of this recording I don’t know yet. So yeah, pregnant with the fourth baby and we were just thinking about, we have help right now. We have an amazing, 2 amazing women who help us out with kids and, you know, maybe like once or twice a week they will help with either babysitting or take the kids out for the day and it does 2 things. Often times it’ll be just to give Amy a break because I’m at work or it’ll be for the 2 of us to go out to dinner, right. So, they’ll come and it allows Amy and I to go out to dinner. But, those 2 people that we have are no longer going to be as available as they have been in the past, plus we’ve got another baby coming.

[02:08]

So, Amy came up to me and we started talking and she was like “I just have no idea where to start finding someone, like finding someone that’s going to help us out.” And, all of a sudden it clicked right away and I was like all the teaching I do with work and teaching people how to accomplish goals, how accomplish anything in their lives, it’s very pertinent to this exact situation and here’s what I had said to her. I was like “Well, you know that we need someone, right?” And, I was like “How many hours do need someone? Like, what are you looking for? And, she was very clear on that. And, the next thing that I said to her was “You just need to now just set your intent and put it to the forefront of your mind that you’re looking for a sitter now.” I was like “Don’t worry about like, you know, do we do this, do we do that, all these different things that you could do, right?” I was like “Just put it in the forefront of your mind and then let’s figure out what the first step is.” So, that’s it. Like, that is the process and everything else falls into line.

[03:19]

I’m going to go through and I’m going to give my 7-step system but so many times we want to know the how and the like ‘how’s everything going to happen’, ‘how do we do it’ and we get stuck and we don’t do anything because we don’t have an understanding on how it’s going to get accomplished. So, the overarching principle to this whole 7-step system is just really getting clear on what it is that you want to do, whatever it is. If it’s something that you want to change, if it’s something that you want to accomplish, if it’s a goal of yours, so get clear on what it is that you want to do and then we’re going to focus on one step like what’s the first step. So, for Amy, it was really just getting clear on what it is that we wanted. She got clear on the sitters and stuff. And then, the first step and this is going to sound crazy to some people but the first step was “Okay, just keep that in the forefront of your mind when you’re going about your day.” And then, as she was going about her days, you know, a couple of days later she was talking to our neighbor and that led to one thing, her son and then her son’s girlfriend and there was an option and, you know, before you know it, a week later, just from putting in the forefront of her mind, we had like 5 different options. So, that’s the power of this.

[04:49]

When you think about like what most people would have done in this situation is, you know, run an ad or like there’s just so many different things but Amy took a step back and thought “Okay, what is the first thing, like what is the goal? And then, what’s the first step?” And, it really was the first and only step. It was putting it in the forefront of her mind, right? And, the importance of putting it in the forefront of your mind let me share this. So, you’re thinking about getting a new car and you’re looking at a car and now all of a sudden whenever you’re driving down the road, all of a sudden, you see that car, right? And, why is that? It’s because that car is now on the forefront of your mind. So, when we put something on the forefront of our mind, it’s not that things magically appear, it’s that we’re now aware of the opportunities that are there for us, right? So, let’s get into the nitty-gritty, the 7-steps. I just wanted to intro that way because I feel like it’s such a paradigm shift for people, like this isn’t hocus pocus, this isn’t, you know, stuff that’s theory, this is how all change happens, right? So, first you have to get that clear intent and then you have to, once you have the clear intent you have to put it on the forefront of your mind.

[06:17]

So, Step number 1, it really is identifying that intent, identifying that goal and you really have to get crystal clear on it. So, it’s not, you know, when Amy and I, and I’m going to refer back in this episode to the story of Amy and I with the sitter, right? And, the crystal clear was we wanted someone with a flexible schedule. We wanted to pay this certain amount of money. We wanted someone that has a certain type of energy. We wanted someone that we could trust with the kids. We wanted someone that was between the ages of like 25 and 45. We want someone with a car. Like, there’s this whole overview of what it is that we want. So, Step number 1, setting your intent, setting your goal and I’m giving you a simple example. But, if your goal is to whatever, find the person of your dreams, like setting that intent, setting that goal, setting out exactly what it is that you want to accomplish. And, I would recommend, go back, listen to Episode 2 of The Business of Life. Just, it’s an awesome episode that’s really going to give you an idea and an overview about what it is that we’re talking about. It’s going to give you a step by step guide to how to really identify what that intent is. But, whatever it is, whether you’re looking to make a massive change in your life, whether it’s just a goal that you’re looking to do, the number 1 thing is identifying that goal. Getting crystal clear on it.

[07:57]

Alright, the second step is understanding the law of the, what I call, the magnetic mind and this is just a super important step. And again, you know, people just, we think about this stuff as hocus pocus sometimes and a lot of people think that it doesn’t really work this way. I’m telling you, whatever you focus your mind on is what you’re going to see more of in your life. So, understanding the principle that “Okay, so I want to make a change in my life. I want to, you know, we need to find a sitter.” The more I have that on the forefront of my mind, the more that I just think about that literally, that’s it. Like, just thinking about it, what’s going to happen is the more opportunities are going to just pop up. The more opportunities that I’m going to see. The opportunities are there. You know, whether you want to call a universal energy, the Divine, God, whatever, those opportunities are put in our path over and over and over again. But, we’re just not tuned in to see them. So, Step number 2 is understanding a lot of that magnetic mind and using it to your advantage, right, like using your mind, setting your mind, setting your intent, tuning the dial. It’s like tuning the dial to a radio station and at first it’s like fuzzy and foggy and it’s not coming in clear and then we really tune it in. We really dial it in. That’s the power of the magnetic mind.

[09:45]

Alright, so number 3 is the principle of what I call ‘the next step’ and that’s what we, you know, we started talking about so once you have that intent down, you need to just focus on what your next step is. And, for some goals, there’s going to be a bunch of steps but there’s only one next step. We’ve had this experience with whether we call it planning or business or forecasting, where we have to have all steps, right? Like, we have to know how we’re going to get there, what we’re going to do, what all the steps are along the way. Don’t waste your time. Like, it doesn’t have to be this difficult. You need to know what your end goal is and then you need to know the next step. And then, you need to focus all of your energy on the next step. Giving a physical example, let’s say that I can currently do 25 pushups and my goal is to get to do 50 pushups, right? My next step isn’t to do 50 pushups. My next step is to do 26 pushups. That’s it. That’s the only goal. I don’t need to think about anything else. Then, my next step after that is 27, then 28, right? Like, you get how that goes. Like, too many times we’re like “Okay, I’m going to do 26 this day, then 27 this day, then twenty like…” No, you’ve lost energy focusing way too far down the road. Keep it simple. Focus on what your next step is. And, along with this ‘what is the next step’, like what’s the next step in the process, you also want to have assessment. So, you want to assess where you are and are you in line with where you want to go, right. So again, just repeating this, the number 3 is the principal of the next step. So, we want to do just one step at a time but we need to assess where we are along the way. We need o assess over and over and over again.

[11:54]

Think about a plane. If a plane is flying from the East Coast to the West Coast, we’ll say New York to L.A., probably the most common flight path, right? So, New York to L.A and that plane does not go in a straight line. So, the plane has an end destination, a goal to get to L.A. but there’s hundreds probably thousands of micro adjustments during that flight. So, the pilot is tilting the nose to the left then tilting it back to the right then to the left, to the right. So, it’s constantly assessing are we on tract, “Oh, we’re going a tiny bit to the right. Now, we need to move to the left.” ‘Are we back on tract? Oh, now we’re going a tiny bit to the left, we need to go to the right.” So, they reassess. They reassess and they do it over and over and over until that plane touches ground in L.A., right, at LAX. That’s how you’re going to go about the process of taking the next step and then assessing, right? Like, the next step is “Okay, we need to move a little bit to the left.” Then, you fly for a little bit, then we reassess, “Oh, we need to move a little bit this way.” Now, think about if that pilot tried to like assess every tiny little turn that it needs to make all at once. Like, you can’t do it, right? But, so many people try to plan out their goals that way. Like, you need to know, they want to know every single step of the way, it’s just, it’s way too complicated. I like simple, actionable things where I can move fast and get closer to my goal as quickly as possible.

[14:35]

KC: Alright, so principle number 4 is you need to get into the feeling nature of it. And, what I mean the feeling nature it’s the feeling nature of the end goal. And, this goes back to that law of the magnetic mind. So, not only are you thinking it, you’re feeling it, right? You’ve probably had this time in your life where you got in tune to something. You knew that, like you were going to do something and just knew what was going to happen because you could feel it, right? Like, you could just feel it. Well, that’s a powerful, powerful thing and when you can feel it, there’s this electricity that happens in your body and your mind and your heart and your spirit, the more you can feel it. Like, thinking it’s one thing, feeling it is totally, totally another thing and the closer you get to that feeling nature, the more power and the more attraction is coming to you. You’re getting closer and closer to your goal and a couple of quick things. Like, how do we get into that feeling nature, here’s some of the things that I use, prayer, so prayer is going to get you there, surrendering over, asking for help, asking the Divine saying that you don’t know how that but that somehow, someway, you know that that end thing that change that you’re focused on is going to come into your life. Visualization, so really visualizing the end result, visualizing it in detail and this isn’t just in the beginning, this is over and over and over.

[16:13]

You know, when I first started with the company, Beachbody, so I do some work with Beachbody and one of the things that I would focus on over and over and over when I first started is I had a bunch of people that wanted to do this business. They wanted to find success in their life. They wanted to live life at a certain level and they had chosen Beachbody and they had chosen me as a sponsor to help them achieve their goals. And, one of the things that I would do is I would visualize their life in the highest, holiest most beautiful way. I saw them in places. I saw them doing things. I saw them experiencing things that they could even see themselves yet. And, I would visualize that over and over and over and I would express that to them over and over and over through months and years until they got to that goal, right? So, the power of that visualization and we get into that feeling nature of it.

[17:13]

And then, also a third thing in the feeling nature so we got prayer, visualization and mantras. One of my favorite mantras is ‘I can. I will. I am.” right. We’re going to ourselves all day. Like, you’re going to talk to yourself all day. It may not be out loud but don’t make any mistake about it. You’re talking to yourself all day long. And, what I like to do is really focus in on that simple, simple mantra, ‘I can. I will. I am.’ ‘I can. I will. I am.’ Over and over and over and then, you’re visualizing the thing that you’re focused in on and there’s just, there’s power in that. So, step number 4, getting into the feeling nature.

[17:59]

Step number 5, using the law of the magnetic mind to overcome obstacles. So, you’re going to and depending on how big your goal is, how big the changes that you want to make in your life, here’s the reality, you’re going to be able to get clear on what you want, like that’s easy. You’re going to be able to take the first steps. That’s easy. You’re going to have energy and excitement. And then, what’s going to happen is you’re going to get to a point that’s not easy anymore. You’re going to get to a point that you drop down to your knees and it just floors you and you want to quit. You don’t want to keep going. You want to give up. And, at that time, you need to draw back onto the end result, onto the feeling of what it’s going to be like when you hit your goal. That’s using a lot of the magnetic mind to get through those obstacles. When you’re in that, you just need to do. So, here’s the deal. You need to focus in on your end goal. Don’t worry about that little micro thing that you’re dealing with. Like, there’s tons of resistance that’s coming up, right? We’ve all faced this. We’ve all gone through this in our life. It’s just that thing has floored us. There’s this energy that came in and we can’t go anymore. We can’t do it anymore, right? When that comes up, that’s when you need to focus on that end goal. You need to see it. You need to believe it. You need to get into the feeling nature of it. And then, you need to get into action on the step that you’re on. Right, maybe you have a goal to lose 50 pounds. You can see it. You can feel it. You know how good that’s going to feel when you lose that weight, right? And, you can get started on that. But then, maybe you lost 25 pounds and you just can’t go any further. It doesn’t matter. Like, there’s just something holding you back and you don’t know how to get through it, right. The only thing that you need to do at that time is focus everything, focus your intent on where it is that you want to go. Use your mantra, “I can. I will. I am.” And then, focus on doing the daily things that you’re doing. What’s the next step? I need to eat this meal clean. I need to do this workout, right. So, focusing in on the intent and then taking action in the moment, that’s how you’re going to use a lot of the magnetic mind to overcome obstacles because you will encounter those obstacles.

[20:42]

Alright and then, number 6 is having nothing on what I call your ‘not willing to do list’. So, here’s the deal, when you go out and you set these big beautiful goals and you want to make massive change in your life, you’re going to come up with some things that you need to do in order to make that change. I don’t care about the things that you’re willing to do. Here’s what I care about, what’s on that list that you’re not willing to do because that is what you need to focus on. That is going to be that big massive obstacle that we talked about in the last step. There needs to be nothing on your list that you’re not willing to do. You want to make change in your life. You’re going to need to grow, plain and simple. And, in order to grow, you need to have nothing and this is, you know, within your morals, right, within your ethical code but you want to lose 50 pounds. Okay, what are you not willing to do? What is the goal for you? Like, what is that big goal right now? What are you not willing to do for it? That list has to be empty. That’s how change happens. Listen, I started this episode off telling you I was going to give you the formula. This is the formula. This is how change happens. It can happen for you, absolutely, but there has to be nothing on that list that you’re not willing to do.

[22:10]

Alright, step number or principle number 7, I like these as principles, they’re not really steps. I call it the time frame bullshit. In my business, a lot of people come and they’re like “You know, if I do all these things, how long is it going to take me to be successful?” I don’t know. All I know is that if you do them and you stick with it over time and you follow these principles that I just outlined, you will be successful. But, so many people are like “I want to go from 25 pushups to 50 pushups and I want to do it in a month.” That’s cool but I would rather you focus on when are you going to do 26 pushups. When are you going to do 27? When are you going to do 28, right? If you’re going to put a timeframe on it, put a timeframe on the next immediate thing that’s right in front of you or if you’re going to put a big timeframe on it, know that timeframe is to get you motivated, get you moving and to get you doing things that you wouldn’t normally do. But, timeframes are arbitrary. So, don’t let them get you down.

[23:15]

So, those are the 7-steps, guys. I want to throw in one bonus step, could be the most important thing. If you’re looking to make a change in your life, if you’re looking to go somewhere different in your life, finding a mentor who has done it before, who has walked in the footsteps before you. And, now we’re talking about big change, right, finding that mentoring, getting as close as you can to that mentor. So, there was a point in my life about 10 years ago, I was on a bad, bad, bad path. I was lost. I didn’t have any sort of stability in my life. I didn’t have any sort of groundedness and I found a mentor, great friend of mine now, Bob Lucido, and I engulfed and I actually became there was an agreement that we had in our spiritual path and it was I became a student of his. That meant that I was 100% all in. Tell me what to do. Tell me how to live my life. Tell me how to do it. And, I was up there. It was about a 3-hour ride to his house. I was spending at least 1 or 2 days there with him. Literally, I would drive out there just to have dinner with them. I would drive out to practice Aikido with them. Every other weekend, I would go out on Friday night and leave on a Sunday night because he was living the type of life that I wanted to live. The power of a mentor, it’s going to take the timeframe to learn something and reduce it to probably one-tenth. You’re going to get around somebody that’s going to have that energy and the belief, the feeling nature and that’s going to rub off on you and that’s going to make it that much more powerful to you making real lasting change in your life, to you hitting the goals that you want to hit, to you making the change that you want to make.

[25:08]

That’s it, guys. It’s all right there. It’s outlined for you. You want to make a change in your life. I love the Jim Rohn quote, “You want to change, you want to move, you want to do something different, you’re not a tree, move.” You don’t know how? Right there, it’s all outlined for you. And, this is for you because I know there’s a lot of people who are listening to this and you’re doubting, “This may not be for me. This may not be, somebody else can do it but I can’t do it. I have this wrong. I have that wrong.” The only thing you have wrong is you’ve had bad thinking over an extended period of time. You can do whatever it is that you set your mind out to. I’ve given you the formula. Now, go live that big bold beautiful life that you were meant to live. I love you guys. Grateful to be, you know, have the opportunity to talk here, to share here and looking forward to connecting with you next time. Have beautiful, beautiful day.

Thank you for listening to The Business of Life podcast. Apply what you learned today and you’ll be one step closer to creating the life you love to live.
