EP35 Mindset Monday – Don’t Quit, Replace
In this episode of Mindset Monday, we’re talking about not quitting one thing, but replacing it with another. So many times we have things in our lives that we don’t want anymore.
The easiest way to discontinue a habit you don’t want to continue, is to replace it with a better habit. If we focus on discontinuing, we’re still focusing on that habit, we’re still giving that habit energy. If we’re focused on not doing something change is difficult. It’s easier to move through something if you’re focused on doing something else.

EPISODE 35
[00:00:13] KC: Welcome to today’s episode of Mindset Monday. Keith here and today we’re talking about not quitting one thing, but replacing it with another. So let me elaborate on that a little bit. So many times we have things in our life that we don’t want anymore. We don’t want to have certain thoughts, we don’t want to continue smoking, or – smoking’s not really that big of a deal anymore, huh? It used to be one. We don’t want to continue eating unhealthy, we don’t want to continue snapping at our kids.
Whatever the, you know what? It’s a habit of yours that you want to discontinue doing. And I’ve found the easiest way to discontinue one thing is to replace it with another. Because if we focus on discontinuing, we’re still focusing on that habit, we’re still giving that habit energy. We’re focusing on not doing something, and it’s easier to move through something if you’re focused on doing something else.
Perfect example, if you were a smoker, right? We’re going back to this smoking example even though nobody really smokes anymore. But say you’re smoker and you want to quit, making a, or setting a goal to run a marathon or starting a workout regiment gives you incentive to do something else. It brings your focus somewhere else and during that time, do you still have to – you still have to move through the work of not smoking, but you’ve replaced one habit with another.
A good friend of mine used to be, or I guess I should say is an alcoholic. He’s been sober for like 27 years and one of the things with alcoholism is he replaced the habit of alcohol with the habit of going to meetings, which becomes the habit of making amends, which becomes the habit of having this empowered, like-minded, supportive community around you and it becomes a habit of living a different way.
I’ve also seen other people that have decided that they wanted to quit drinking and not go to AA. So they decided to try and do it themselves, a lot of times this is called a dry drunk. And inevitably they wind up going back because they’re always still focused on the drinking and they

haven’t created habit, tools, community, etc., around something healthier. So whatever it is that you’re trying to quit, don’t think about quitting, focus on replacing.
Alright, have a beautiful, beautiful week.
