[INTRODUCTION]

KC:  Welcome to The Business of Life Podcast. My name is Keith Callahan, your host, and this morning, I want to talk to you about the power of focus.

Here’s the deal. If we’re not consciously choosing what we’re focusing on, the majority of the time our mind is going to gravitate towards the negative. Our mind is going to gravitate towards guilt, shame, anger, insecurities, judgments, all these negative things and two really simple examples and I sort of lean on both of these. I think – I believe that first of all, meditation and prayer – like dedicated meditation and prayer time is imperative. You have to be doing that. You have to be doing that in your life, whether it’s meditation, whether it’s prayer, whether it’s visualization, positive affirmations. Like sitting down and doing that, those are – that’s like planting – putting a stake in the ground, putting a firm stake in the ground that you’re doing on a daily basis.

But then throughout your day, the two different ways that I’ve seen this done, I’ve seen it done. I have a friend who he picks something that he’s doing to focus on and it could be gratitude. It could be – gratitude is just so powerful and I got stuck on that word when I said it. But it could be gratitude. It could be compassion. It could be humility. He sticks with that word and he does a couple of three-hour blocks during the day, like 9:00 to 12:00, 12:00 to 3:00, 3:00 to 6:00 and really like anytime he – your mind is going to wander. You’re doing things throughout the day. But anytime he comes back to awareness, he focuses on that word.

Then I have another spiritual leader/friend who – this isn’t even a friend really. Just a real high level spiritual mentor of mine. He goes every half hour into deep, deep like silent prayer. It’s amazing. I will be driving with him and I will just – all of a sudden just get quiet and he goes into this deep, deep space.

Then a half hour later, he’s laughing and chuckling and telling jokes and then he will just stop and he will go back into this deep, deep space. I wanted to give those two different examples. But the most important thing – like here’s the all-encompassing thing. What you – if you’re not choosing what you’re focusing on, then it’s most likely going to go to all these different thoughts of why you’re not enough throughout the day.

So we want to consciously choose the thoughts that we’re focusing on throughout the day and I believe the anchor is having dedicated prayer, visualization, meditation time and then really just focusing throughout the day, focusing your thoughts, focusing your energy on the positive and that’s what you’re going to get. This isn’t – the thing to really know about this, this is an everyday, all-day, for the rest of your life thing. This isn’t something that just goes away. It gets easier. It builds power. It gets more powerful, but consciously directing your thoughts throughout the day.
