EP108 How to Stop Being Defensive & Let the Truth In
In this episode, we talk about how to drop your defensive wall & allow yourself to listen and let new truths in.
Welcome to The Business of Life Podcast! My name is Keith Callahan, your host. And today, I want to talk to you about becoming a truth seeker in your life. So most of us go through our days, our weeks, our months, our years in sort of this fog. We go through a – our journey here on earth in this fog and while we’re in this fog, we often have a misconception or probably a better way to word it would be a lack of clarity about the truth, the true nature of who it is that you are, of how you act in a situation.
So it’s so cool like how the – the ways that my morning goes. So I record these podcasts in the morning and I get up between 5:00 and 6 o’clock in the morning. I go downstairs, make coffee, and I – right now, it’s late fall. So I will sit in front of the fireplace for a half hour or so and just do an informal meditation prayer while I’m drinking my coffee, sort of watching the fire and just in a listening receptive space, trying to be real present.
So this morning, I was doing that and I was sitting there and I remembered a dream that I had last night and the dream was – there was a little argument that my wife and I got into and we never really get into arguments and she flat out said to me that – during this argument that I was being a little rough and a little harsh with the kids, that my manner of interaction was a little rough and a little harsh with them.
So my normal tendency, when something like that happens and if it happened in like life, like in our daily life, is to put up my guard to get defensive, to not want to hear that. It’s something that I work very, very hard on, on a daily basis is to not put up that guard and actually receive it in.
Not put it up. Not to feel threatened when somebody is bringing something like that up, to actually embrace it and to feel gratitude, because it’s something that I can now look at. It’s something that I can now be aware of.
So that’s the – that sort of popped in this morning and I was like, “This is a great podcast topic,” because it’s about being a truth seeker in your life and I was grateful to remember that dream this morning because it’s something that I can look at now and it’s something that I can work on. It’s something that I can take it, I can see the reality of things. Then the second step is I have to be loving enough with myself to know that even though that’s currently present, even though I may be having been acting a little bit harsh with the kids, right?
And just through words and – this all comes back down to – I don’t want to get too far off topic. But it all comes back down to how I treat myself because how we treat ourselves is how we’re going to treat others. So just being more loving, more kind, gentler, having more compassion. You know, all of those things that I can have a little bit more towards myself is going to flow over into the children.
But yeah, being a seeker of truth in your life. Like, what is the reality of your entire life? And finding those little things that you want to change, listen, you can’t change it all at once. You can’t change it all at once but you can change a couple of things, one or two things at a time and we have to have that love and compassion for ourselves while we’re going through it. We have to have that fortitude and that discipline and that persistence to stay with it because we’re going to – if we’re not super attuned to it, if we’re not super aware, we’re going to mess up again. We’re going to go back to our old ways.
So having that gentleness with yourself while you go through the extended period of time to make the change. That’s funny. As I’m recording this, I always take notes when I record podcasts. So I think that’s all I wanted to say about this. So being a truth seeker, having an open heart and an open mind to see the reality of who you really are as a person and then always trying to become brighter, happier, shinier, more of service, more humble, more filled with gratitude. You know, all those beautiful characteristics, more fortitude, more discipline, more perseverance, more steadiness in your life. You know, whatever it is that you’re looking to do, be a truth seeker. Look at all those things. Have gentleness for yourself no matter where you are right now and then go about doing it. Go about working on things one thing at a time.
All right. Have a beautiful, beautiful day. See you on the next episode.
KC: Hey, Keith here, and today I have a free gift for you. Listen this free gift is a list of the 12 most influential books that I’ve ever read. These are the books that have helped me to create the mindset, learn the philosophies, learn the skills to really create this big, beautiful, life that we’re living now.
I read a crazy amount of books, I really do. I’ve probably read thousands of books and these are the top 12 books that – they’re the ones that I go to, they’re the ones that I work with over, and over, and over again. They are highlighted, outlined, dog-eared. And I put this list together for you because I want it to be a shortcut.
I don’t want you to have to – you don’t have to go out and read the thousands and thousands of books. These are the 12 that I highly recommend. I have a detailed review for each book, explaining why I recommend them, why I like them, when I worked with them in my life, what part of my life they helped me to improve.
So I put this together for you, and made it super each for you to get this list. All you have to do is send a text to the number 33444 and then in the body of that text, type in “12books” with no space. So that’s the number “12books”. Again, send the text message to the number, address it to 33444 and then type in “12books” as the message and just send that. And that’ll get you setup to receive those top 12 most influential books that have had the biggest impact on my life.
KC: Today’s episode is brought to you by our sister podcast, All About Beachbody Coaching. So All About Beachbody Coaching really allows us to do this podcast without having all those annoying commercials in the beginning for you. So All About Beachbody Coaching, the Beachbody business that Amy and I run, actually funds this podcast.
So yes, it does cost money to run this podcast, we do not charge you anything, we don’t throw in commercials or anything like that, it really is, it’s funded by our business and by our other podcast, All About Beachbody Coaching. And for me, I’m just eternally grateful for this opportunity because it’s allowed me to really create the life that I love to live.
It’s given me the opportunity to do what I want, when I want, with who I want, and even deeper than that, it’s allowed me to help others to create the same for themselves. It’s allowed me to help hundreds of other people become part time or full time Beachbody coaches, to leave that corporate 9 to 5 job and create passive income in their lives.
And really there’s nothing like that. It’s cool when you have success, it’s so much more rewarding when you help others. So I mention this or a few reasons, the first reason is, that’s actually the way that I work with people and mentor people. I don’t do anything outside of Beachbody coaching because I know that it’s such a powerful life changing tool.
So if you’re curious about working with me, interested in working one-on-one, interested in creating the type of life that you wanna live, I suggest swinging over there. The other reason is, even if somebody’s just curious, like you’ve heard about Beachbody, you know there’s a lot of Beachbody coaches out there. Maybe some of them you get a little annoyed with.
It really dives into what this business is really about, which is life transformation. So if you’re just curious, swing over there. And then the other piece is, if you’re really considering becoming a Beachbody coach, I highly, highly recommend you listen to that first.
Alright, much love guys. Again, that is the All About Beachbody Coaching Podcast, our sister podcast.
ANNOUNCER: Thank you for listening to the Business of Life Podcast. Apply what you learned today and you’ll be one step closer to creating the life you love to live.
